The digital age is making it easier, faster and cheaper to develop new products and services than ever before. Cornell Tech is building a diverse environment of academics and practitioners who excel at imagining, researching and building digitally-enabled products and services to directly address societal and commercial needs, particularly in areas that both draw on and contribute to the vibrancy of New York City.
Cornell Tech SOLutions
The Runway Startup Postdoc Program is part business school, part research institution, part startup incubator. Based at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute, Runway ushers recent PhDs in digital technology fields through a paradigm shift—from an academic mindset to an entrepreneurial outlook. Postdocs come to the Institute with ideas for unproven products and markets and receive significant support as well as mentorship from academic and business experts in connective media, health technology, security & privacy and computer vision, among a number of other fields.
AI and Robotics Research
Systems that automatically learn and derive insight from data are already having a fundamental impact on our world — in areas from healthcare to self-driving cars — yet in many ways we are still in the early days. We are seeing the rapid development of new methods for modeling and predicting the world from data, and these methods are enabling new applications in automatically interpreting language and images.
Cornell Tech’s artificial intelligence group is at the forefront of these advances, and includes world experts in computer vision, natural language processing, and machine learning. Cornell Tech faculty work on the spectrum of AI methods, from fundamental algorithms to user-facing applications. They also believe that cross-disciplinary collaboration is key to having an impact on the real world.
Law and Policy Research
Disruptive technologies pose deep challenges at all levels of society. Used in the right ways, new tools can bring people together, make possible new forms of creativity, and banish scarcity. Used in the wrong ways, they can ruin lives and unleash massive destruction. Everything from individuals’ innermost thoughts to the future of the human species is at stake.
The Business, Law, and Policy group studies the interactions between technology and society, with a special focus on creating institutions to steer technologies along healthier paths. From drones to derivatives contracts, from search engines to startups, the group studies the consequences of the use and misuse of technology.
The group puts ideas into action in three ways. First, they improve the designs of technologies by identifying changes that make harmful uses harder and beneficial uses easier. Second, they improve the deployment of technologies by optimizing the business and legal arrangements that bring them to market. And third, they improve the regulation of technologies by suggesting sensible rules for courts and regulators to adopt.
